Welcoming our Refugee Brothers and Sisters
with Sister Norma Pimentel, MJ
The Center at Mariandale is pleased to introduce Sr. Norma Pimentel, who will speak on the topic Welcoming our Refugee Brothers and Sisters. Inspired by the example of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, the Center at Mariandale celebrates the leadership of Catholic women religious who are at the forefront of the church's social justice teaching and action. In that spirit, the Center is deeply honored to host Sr. Norma Pimentel, Missionary of Jesus and Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Recognized in 2020 as one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people and a recipient of the University of Notre Dame's prestigious Laetare Medal, Sr. Norma will speak of her own experiences of welcoming refugees and how communities can make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable families. This event supports the Center at Mariandale's on-going collaborations with area refugee relief organizations.
This will be a hybrid program; both in person in the Chapel at Mariandale and online for those who wish to participate through Zoom.

About the Presenter:
For the past three decades, Sr. Norma has been supporting more than 100,000 migrants seeking refuge in the U.S. along Texas' border with Mexico with emergency food, shelter, housing assistance, clinical counseling and pregnancy care. She has been personally recognized by Pope Francis and is a recipient of the University of Notre Dame’s prestigious Laetare Medal. In 2020, Sr. Norma was recognized by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
