Learn the ancient craft of basketry and create a basket using rattan round reed.

In this day-long workshop, you will learn how to center your mind as you explore weaving as a meditative practice. The pliable reed will be used to start the center section, bend the sides and form the finished shape of your unique basket. The repetitive over and under weaving technique will calm your mind while you explore your creativity. No previous weaving experience is necessary. Please bring a dishpan, scissors or shears and towel. All other materials will be provided and included in the fee.

Morning:

• Introductions
• Types of materials and tools
• Prepare reeds
• Complete the center'
• Shape the bottom
• Start weaving the sides

Afternoon:

• Continue to weave the sides
• Experiment with new materials
• Complete the form
• Finish the border
• Review

About the Presenter/Instructor:
Mara is a visual artist, writer and yoga teacher. Her degree is in Fine Art from Skidmore College, New York and she has taught classes at Frog Hollow Craft School and Hudson Valley Community College. The New York Foundation for the Arts and Vermont Studio Center has awarded her grants and residencies. She exhibits her collages and sculptures in regional and national shows.
