DESCRIPTION: The co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement, a prolific journalist and determined, social activist, Dorothy Day (1897-1980) is coined by many as "New York's saint."\n\nHow does her radical spirituality – grounded in volunteer poverty, non-violence, eucharistic devotion, and activism – speak to people of this day and age?\nHow might she be a wisdom figure in the contemporary world which is often deemed as secular, materialistic, and techno-centered?\n\nThis day-long conference at Mariandale provides opportunity to unpack these questions with people who knew Dorothy well: her granddaughter, Martha Hennessy, and Robert Ellsberg, Editor-in-Chief of Orbis books, who lived in the Catholic Worker in the mid-70's and who edited Dorothy Day: Selected Writings (2005).\nActive Catholic worker members, along with students and faculty of area Catholic Colleges, will lead discussions as they seek to make sense of Dorothy Day from a contemporary lens. The day will provide ample opportunity for prayer, reflection, and enjoyment of the scenic land at Mariandale. \nCo-sponsors include: Fordham University, Iona University, Manhattan College, Molloy University, Mount Saint Mary College, Sacred Heart University, Seton Hall University, and St. John's University, and the University of Mount Saint Vincent. \nDate/Time: Saturday, April 13 from 9:30am to 4pm\nFee: $40 Adults, $20 students (includes lunch)\nThe Keynote Speakers' presentations are as follows:\n\n"The Duty of Delight: Dorothy Day and the Spirituality of Daily Life,”  Robert Ellsberg\n"Dorothy Day and the Mystical Body of Christ,"  Martha Hennessy\n\n\nGuest Speakers: \nMartha Hennessy is a peace activist and member of the Catholic Worker Movement co-founded by her grandmother, Dorothy Day. She is the seventh child of Tamar, Dorothy Day's only child. She has been arrested and imprisoned protesting nuclear power, war, the use of drones, the torture of prisoners in Guantanamo and other prisons, and the use of starvation as a weapon of war in Yemen. She has traveled to Russia, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Jordan, and Palestine to understand the effects of war on other peoples. Martha divides her time between the family farm in Vermont and volunteer work at Maryhouse Catholic Worker in New York City.
